are you paying attention?
the world's most valuable commodity
We live in an attention economy.
Whether you realize it or not, your attention is one of the most valuable resources you possess.
No app, no ad, no person can own your attention unless you give it to them.
And yet, billions of dollars are spent every year trying to capture your focus, redirect your energy, and influence your thoughts. Why?
Because your attention has power.
Where’s Your Attention Going?
Take a moment to notice. What’s pulling your focus today (besides this lol)?
It’s not just the outside world fighting for your attention. Internally, your thoughts compete too. Are you focusing on narratives that serve you, or are you letting fears, worries, or judgments take center stage?
Attention is like sunlight: what you focus on grows.
The Economics of Attention
Herbert A. Simon, the economist who coined the term “attention economy,” said it best:
“A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.”
In a world overflowing with content, focus becomes increasingly scarce—and that scarcity has value. It’s why platforms use sophisticated algorithms to keep us scrolling, liking, and clicking.
This isn’t inherently bad; some tools genuinely enrich our lives. The challenge is discerning when your attention serves your goals—and when it serves someone else’s.
Why Attention is a Superpower
Attention isn’t just a commodity; it’s the foundation for everything we do.
We can’t love without attention.
We can’t create, grow, or connect without it.
The artists, thinkers, and innovators we admire didn’t stumble into success. They trained their minds to tune out distractions and focus on what mattered most.
What would it look like for you to do the same?
Reclaiming Your Attention
In this attention economy, the greatest act of rebellion is owning your focus.
Here’s how I try:
Audit Your Attention: Spend a day noticing where your attention goes. What’s stealing it? What’s deserving of it?
Be Intentional: Choose what gets your energy. Curate your media, your conversations, and especially your thoughts.
Detox from Distractions: Unplug when you need to. Create boundaries with your devices.
Feed What Matters: Focus on the people, projects, and passions that align with your values.
When we reclaim our attention, we reclaim our power. We stop consuming and start creating. We stop reacting and start living intentionally.
The attention economy is real, and we’re all part of it. But the choice is yours: will you let others spend your most valuable resource, or will you take charge of where it goes?
See you on the next edit.

Silvia
