There’s something very calming about the way you described this.
The image of life as a river rather than a road feels very true. Many of us spend so much energy trying to predict every bend ahead that we forget the purpose of the journey is simply to keep moving with awareness.
What stood out to me most was the idea that effort helps us steer the boat, but it doesn’t control the river itself. That distinction alone can relieve a lot of unnecessary tension in life.
Sometimes the most meaningful progress comes not from forcing direction, but from learning how to read the current with patience and humility.
thank you for this! you captured the spirit of the idea beautifully. I love how you put it: the purpose of the journey is simply to keep moving with awareness. so much tension comes from trying to predict every bend instead of learning to read the current as it comes <3
Thank you for such a thoughtful reply. I’m really glad the reflection resonated with you.
That image of learning to read the current instead of predicting every bend stayed with me after reading your piece. It feels like such a gentle reminder that life isn’t always something we control as much as something we learn to move through with awareness.
Sometimes simply remembering that can ease a surprising amount of pressure.
The concept of us navigating a boat on the river rather than walking down a predictable road really is what makes life special and is what gives us good stories to tell. If everything were predictable it would be much too boring.
thank you!!! absolutely, life being unpredictable is exactly what gives us the best stories. the bends in the river are usually where the interesting parts begin!
This reminds me of an encounter with a renowned Master and me burdening him with my 'impending' troubles and seeking 'instant' resolutión and advice from him. He took a moment until I cooled my desperation and said something in these lines: "Dear friend, breath for a moment and just take it easy. Make your best and let life take you wherever needs to go." I usually recal this when trying to push the river.😅
In this society, even the definition of moving forward is so far from the truth and so fractured that it sometimes makes me angry thinking about the good of the humanity.
This reminds me of my very first post on Substack. I didn’t know at the time about The River Theory, but I experienced it in practice.

wow beautiful!! you were paddling all along <3
Without even realizing it. 😉
Control = fear.
Do not fear, love.
love over everything! absolutely
Beautiful post
It’s not about holding control over everything…
it’s about reaching a place within where you no longer feel the need to control anything. ✨
so well said!! thank you

Control what you can control…. Time reveal everything and don’t live in illusion
This was a great read—subscribed straight away. Feel free to take a look at mine as well, I’d appreciate a subscription.

Great read!
Learning to navigate the river is one thing, but the sturdiness of the boat is what you can control. Both are important.
Beautiful reminder 🚣♀️
One of my favourite Mary Oliver poems says something like...
If I had a boat
I'd like to have a boat I couldn't steer
🤗
Even the river takes the path of least resistance. Beautiful write. Thanks.
This was sooo beautifully written, learning to embrace action over outcome is something we're all working on right now it seems!
